The L2 Motivational Self System

In recent years there has been a huge increase in research into the motivation to learn a foreign language. Much of that interest rests on the premise that motivation is essential to successful language learning and that a greater understanding of motivation can connect theory and practice, and ultimately improve learning outcomes. At the centre of this increase in research interest has been Zoltan D?rnyei’s L2 Motivational Self System. In this lecture, I will discuss this framework of language learner motivation, considering its development, its uses and some of its misuses. I will conclude by considering how this framework fits foreign language learning settings where learners have little everyday exposure to the target language.
