Innovative methodology: The case of Q

人: Stephen Ryan

In order to better understand the full complexity of the language learning experience, new research instruments are required. Neither conventional quantitative methods nor simple qualitative interview studies offer a complete picture. In this lecture, through a step-by-step explanation of a case study, I introduce a research approach with great potential: Q. Q is an integrated package of philosophy, concepts, data collection, statistical analysis, and data interpretation used to classify and describe the subjective viewpoints of a group of people in a specific context. Q offers both an innovative approach to research and unique insights into the workings of the human mind. Furthermore, it does so in a way that offers learners an opportunity to reflect on their own learning.
